Manufacturers rely on plate magnets to trap iron particles in free flowing materials while helping to keep costs low. For low volume production, light duty plates placed in chutes are used. Suspended above pulleys and conveyor belts, they come in single gap designs. The standard thickness is one inch.

By comparison, at one point five inches, heavy duty plates provide more magnetic pull over more time. They come hinged to allow for easier cleaning and are available in single or double gap styles. Clearly, plate magnets are built for versatility.

Rare earth metals comprise these magnets. They are extremely powerful and thus, their expensiveness is justified. Samarium Cobalt is one example of a rare earth metal, all of which are resistant to demagnetization. Sintered versions can be made from iron boron and neodymium which are first compacted in the presence of strong magnetic fields. Plate magnets are most often ceramic magnets. Made of Strontium Ferrite, these magnets offer great cost savings over other magnetic materials. Abundant, cheap materials go into their making; China produces the greatest number of plate magnets. With terrific resistance to corrosion, plate magnets operate well in moderate heat. A few considerations are important before purchase. But generally speaking, these magnets offer a cost effective option for lower product densities.
